Derwentwater is one of the largest lakes within the Lake District National Park in Cumbria – North West England – and is situated immediately South of Keswick.

Swinside Lodge Country House is a peaceful, friendly AA 2 Star Hotel set in its own gardens situated in the beautiful Newlands Valley, making it one of the best Keswick Hotels. Swinside Lodge Hotel is surrounded by hills (known locally as fells) including Cat Bells, Causey Pike, Skiddaw and Blencathra. Direct access from Swinside Lodge can be made into the Newlands Valley and surrounding villages of Braithwaite, Grange, Borrowdale, Rossthwaite, Underscar, Bassenthwaite and Ireby.

The Keswick Launch operates a passenger service between the various landing stages with the most popular stops being Keswick, Portinscale and the Lodore Falls, the latter giving access to the famous Ashness Bridge, one of the Lakelands most idyllic scenes.

Swinside Lodge Hotel not only offers quality guest accommodation but also award winning food in our AA 2 Rosette fine dining restaurant and was recently voted in the top 3 Fine Dining Restaurants in Cumbria.  Complimented by our 130 Bin wine list - recently awarded the AA Notable Wine List Award - making this an excellent Keswick restaurant. We take great pride in the quality of the food we serve created for our award winning AA 2 Rosette Restaurant by Chef Clive Imber. We are recommended by Michelin as a very 'Pleasant Hotel', and have recently been given a breakfast award by Visit England.

NON-RESIDENTS ARE WELCOME TO DINE at the restaurant by prior arrangement – canapés and set four course dinner with Chefs petits fours and coffee, is £45 per person.

Walking

Walking is one of the main reasons why people visit the Lake District – many foot paths can be explored within the fells and forests surrounding the Lakes, and indeed the Allerdale Ramble on the lower section of Cat Bells is a mere 5 minute stroll from Swinside Lodge. There is a regular bus service along the Keswick to Buttermere road which runs along the eastern shore of the Lake and an un-classified road passing by Swinside Lodge on the western shore connecting the village of Portinscale and Grange in Borrowdale. Nature is abound within and around the lake and it is believed to be the last remaining habitat of the Vendace (Coregonus Vandesius) fish from the four originally known.

Wildlife

Wildlife is plentiful at Swinside Lodge Hotel with regular visits from deer, hares, resident pheasants, ducks and red squirrels and to date twenty-eight varieties of bird has been sighted in the garden.

Further afield around Bassenthwaite Lake is the Osprey viewing centre where the tagged Ospreys return each year for nesting.

Adventure

For the more adventurous Whinlatter Forest and its off-road mountain bike trails offer a challenging experience - whilst there visit the Go-Ape Tree top Adventure in Whinlatter for a fun day out.

Further afield test yourself climbing the famous Three Peaks, namely Scarfell Pike, Snowdonia and further north Scotland's Ben Nevis using Swinside Lodge Hotel as a stop-off point on the way north. Visit Keswicks very own Keswick Mountain Festival where advancements in technology and equipment for walking and climbing make it one of the UKs leading outdoor festivals.

Cyclists are not to be outdone with the 210 mile challenging riding from the West Coast of Cumbria to Robin Hoods Bay in North Yorkshire passing by our doorstep making Swinside Lodge the perfect C2C accommodation.

For the less physically adventurous visit the historic house and gardens by Bassenthwaite Lake of Mirehouse or Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum, the historic Holker Hall and Gardens. Try the romantic Hutton-in-the-Forest with its walled gardens or the Elizabethan family home of Levens Hall and garden.
